MARTIN Wood is community development worker at Rutherford AFC. Rutherford AFC is a family facility at the heart of the community. As well as providing football for children and adults from development to competitive level, the club focuses on the social, health and community aspects of sport.
This is used to empower disadvantaged individuals to increase personal skills and attributes such as confidence, team work, motivation, volunteering and community involvement/ citizenship. The club also has deaf teams and is looking to develop this at junior level as well as working with local police, drug and alcohol teams and Barnardo's to work with disadvantaged young people. MRutherford AFC are members of Sported. and have benefited from signposting and development support.
See www.sported.org.uk or contact North East regional manager Sandra Hillyard on 07775 602 137, email S.Hillyard@sported.org.uk Were you ill much as a child? Never really, I was quite a healthy child, I achieved 99% attendance at senior school only having three days off in five years.
What sports and activities did you take part in at school? Contact sports were my favourite such as football, rugby and fun games like British bulldog, etc. I played for my school team and also my local youth team (Blaydon JFC) and even spent my lunch times at school playing against the teachers.
Have you ever had a health scare? No, I have been quite lucky so far in that department.
Have you ever had an operation? The closest I've had to an operation is a camera down my throat when I had stomach ulcers. That was the most uncomfortable thing ever!
How often do you exercise and what do you do? I coach football at Rutherford AFC to two age groups, under-eights which always keeps me on my toes and the reserves in which I still occasionally pull my boots on. On a weekend I also play for my Sunday team who play in the Tyneside Sunday League.
What's the most challenging activity/event you've ever done? I cycled the Coast2Coast bike ride in aid of Cancer Research in 2008.
OT The route took us three days to complete from Whitehaven to North Shields and I can honestly say it was the hardest, charactertesting, physically pushing thing I have ever done.
It didn't …
