Bilbao of Belfield Have Earned Premier Rights

IN SPAIN, Athletic Bilbao are praised for their attractive style of play. In England, Crewe Alexandra are hailed for their excellent youth structure. Yet, on these shores UCD are rarely given the credit they deserve for combining the two.
The argument that they are nothing more than a feeder club should have ended when they won the FAI Cup back in 1984. They have long been a competitive force in the League of Ireland and try telling their last two managers -- Pete Mahon and Paul Doolin -- that they were only making up the numbers.
The Students may not have challenged for the Premier Division title in recent years, but they measure success on a different level. The Dublin outfit look to competitions like the Collingwood Cup, the A Championship and the new Under 19 League as one's that they want to dominate -- and they have.
Just like Bilbao, they are strict in sticking to their principles of promoting from within, playing passing football and never putting unrealistic pursuits ahead of shortterm goals. …
