The book opens with the suicide of her boyfriend, Stevie, in rather gruesome detail. And he did it, Kimberly says, because she drove him to it. Ultimately, Kimberly ends up with her own fate being left up in the air. The reader, asked to roll a dice, ends up deciding on what is to happen to her out of six possible endings, each with varying degrees of abject horror.
