CBC-TV to Board Up Unique Meeting Place: Anglican Host (Hope) Seeley to Lose Job

Bettson, Bob, Anglican Journal

Meeting Place, CBC Television's long-running weekly broadcast of religious services, has been cancelled due to budget cutbacks and will air its last program on Easter Sunday.

The demise of Meeting Place leaves Man Alive as the only CBC show which could be considered religious broadcasting. Meeting Place's only full-time employee, host and producer Hope Seeley, a member of Toronto's St. Clement's Anglican Church, loses her job as a result of the cut.

But Ms. Seeley said the greatest damage is the opportunity to bring worship from many denominations and faiths to shut-ins and those not attending regular religious services. She said the program's ratings have improved in recent years to about 150,000 viewers, despite a time-slot where the program is often shifted for professional sports in some time zones.

Ms. Seeley, host of Meeting Place since 1989, says judging from the mail the show receives, "it meant an awful lot to many people." Meeting Place provided broadcasts of a wide range of religious expression, with frequency of a denomination or faith based on census figures.

The decision to shut down Meeting Place was purely financial, said Bob Culbert, executive director of TV News, Current Affairs, and NewsWorld.
