NEW DEAL NEW MAN; TOMORROW'S EUROPA LEAGUE ACTION AVB: Red-Hot Defoe Has Got His Confidence from Me & the New Contract He Deserved

Byline: DARREN LEWIS

ANDRE VILLAS-BOAS believes he is getting the best out of Jermain Defoe.

The Spurs boss persuaded chairman Daniel Levy to give the England striker a new deal during the summer.

Now, instead of being disillusioned and ready to quit as he was under Harry Redknapp, Defoe is in top form with six goals in 10 games for club and country.

Villas-Boas said: "I think he has received his confidence from me and he is showing his quality.

"In the summer we told him we really wanted him here. That's why we spoke with his agent and the chairman about his contract renewal.

"So at the moment we're extremely happy with what he is doing. And I'm sure that's having an impact on the way he feels about himself."

Although he spent most of last season on the bench, Defoe still managed 17 goals for Tottenham, who face Panathinaikos in the Europa League tomorrow.

Now AVB, who took charge of Spurs in July, believes Defoe is champing at the bit to make up for lost time.

He added: "He scored so many goals last season from an interrupted sequence of games.

"He has performed so well for this club and you have to respect the fact he keeps on motivating himself to show that.

"Now he's getting confidence from being given games from the start. He's been excellent.

"His desire and his motivation are there and his movement is fantastic. I think he will continue. He has been creating so much and has been immense for the team.

"He is now getting continuous opportunities that maybe he didn't have in the past.
