CHANCELLOR George Osborne must have grimaced when he realised austerity will have to continue to 2017-18. The prospect of having to fight an election in 2015 with no sign of an early end to the war on the deficit will have made him glower.
Families across the UK will also shudder at the prospect of more austerity - but the rise in the personal tax allowance and the axing of the fuel duty increase will make this pill a little less bitter.
The additional PS227m of capital funding for the Welsh Government is a welcome boost that can fund important infrastructure and invigorate the local construction industry.
It will not solve the financial challenges facing the Welsh Government but it has the potential to be a strategic stimulus for the nation's economy.
It is imperative that Wales taps into the PS600m of additional funding for science and technology. Swansea University has shown it can win bids, most recently when it secured funding for its PS38m Energy Safety Research Institute. Institutions across Wales should collaborate to ensure true centres of excellence gain global recognition for their expertise.
