Atheletes Put through Paces by Olympics; Robbie Grabarz Holds Training Class with College Students

Byline: THEO MERZ

OLYMPIC bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz visited Gateshead for a training master class with college students.

Eight budding high jumpers from the Gateshead Academy of Sport were put through their paces in an hour-long session of hurdles, technical exercises and yoga stretching.

The Olympian's visit came ahead of the 2013 European Athletics' Team Championships, which will be held at the Gateshead International Stadium in June.

Grabarz, right, cleared 2.29m to win high-jumping bronze at the 2012 London Olympics. He said it was "great to give something back to the sport" after the one-hour training session.

The British number one highjumper and current European champion was joined by his coach, Fayyadd Ahmed.

The students worked with enthusiasm, he said.

Councillor Linda Green, Gateshead Council cabinet member for culture, said the visit was just the start of top-level athletes visiting the North East this year.

Mrs Green said: "The 2013 European Athletics Team Championships provides a fantastic opportunity for people in the North East to experience world-class athletics on their doorstep.
