Markets Voted Down

Mike Derry

OPPONENTS of markets in Nielson Park at Bargara applauded yesterday as Bundaberg Regional Council decided the proposal would not go ahead.

Bundaberg Landcare president Michael Johnson hailed the move as a C[pounds sterling]commonsense decisionC[yen].

C[pounds sterling]The area just simply didnCOt suit markets,C[yen] Mr Johnson said.

C[pounds sterling]ItCOs sandy soil and it couldnCOt handle the traffic.C[yen]

Mr Johnson said while he was not against markets, Nielson Park was a fragile area.

C[pounds sterling]Imagine all the vehicles there,C[yen] he said.

C[pounds sterling]The roads are too narrow; it would just destroy the area.C[yen]

Mr Johnson suggested the proposed markets would be better off at the Bargara Cultural Centre in Hughes Rd, where there was plenty of parking.

He said he would like to see Nielson Park protected for all time.

C[pounds sterling]It needs to be left like it is,C[yen] he said.

The decision on the markets was part of a wider approval of a new Nielson Park Trust Land Management Plan.
