Former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada was born Joseph Marcelo Ejercito on April 19, 1937, in Tondo, Manila, to Emilio L. Ejercito, Sr. and Maria A. Marcelo. He is married to former Senator Dr. Luisa P. Ejercito by whom he has three children -Senate President Pro Tempore Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada, Jackie E. Lopez, and Jude P. Estrada. He was still a young boy when their family moved to San Juan. He studied at the Ateneo de Manila University and Mapua Institute of Technology. He was conferred the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, by Bicol University on April 3, 1997, and the University of Pangasinan on March 23, 1990.
Estrada entered politics in 1967. He was elected San Juan Mayor in 1969 and served for 17 years. He was elected Senator in 1985. In 1987, he was again elected to the Senate, where he became Chairman of several committees. His bill on the protection and propagation of carabaos, the national beast of burden, became a landmark legislation. He was elected Vice President in 1992, along with Fidel V.
