Emma,COs Sonnet a Threat

Byline: Tony McMahon tmbsport@capnews.com.au

WHILE all the talk will centre on Hodgie and Mo in todayCOs $20,000 Rocky Amateurs Bracelet (1200m) at Callaghan Park, lightweight EmmaCOs Sonnet has admirable form.

For the Spirit Of Liberty mareCOs trainer, RockhamptonCOs Clinton Thompson, a start in the prestigious race is itself quietly satisfying.

Thompson is one of the emerging trainers at Callaghan Park and today, in some ways, completes a full circle for him.

C[pounds sterling]Back in the late 70s and early 80s, I was an apprentice bush jockey based with my father at Clermont,C[pounds sterling] Thompson said. C[pounds sterling]I rode professionally for about three years but I got to like the taste of food and thatCOs as long I lasted.C[yen]

But Thompson then rode as an amateur jockey and todayCOs Rocky Amateurs meeting jogged his memory.

C[pounds sterling]I can remember riding a horse called Tuscany which was owned by the late Rex Pilbeam, the mayor of Rockhampton, in an 1800m race as an amateur jockey on the old sand track at Callaghan Park,C[pounds sterling] he said. C[pounds sterling]I got sandblasted and it finished well back.C[yen] Thompson believes it will be an entirely different scenario with EmmaCOs Sonnet, the winner of her last three starts in the Bracelet run at 3.16pm.

C[pounds sterling]I honestly think she will be hard to beat,C[yen] he said. C[pounds sterling]She has improved with every start for me and keeps stepping up to the plate.
