With the hoopla surrounding the corys first NBA preseason game in the books, attention shifts back to the climax of what has been a long, controversial and thrilling race for the UAAP basketball crown. La Salle and University of Santo Tomas will put everything on the line when they vie for the pinnacle of this seasons cage hostilities today in the rubber match of the best-of-three title series at the Mall of Asia Arena. The duel between two storied basketball programs has been competitive, with the underdog Tigers taking the series opener by a hairline (73-72) before the Archers stayed alive in the ensuing encounter (77-70). It forced the series to take a one-week respite, allowing the players of both teams to recharge, refocus and readjust their game plan for the 4 p.m. spectacle. However, the looming weather disturbance caused by Typhoon Santi could lead to the possibility of the highly-anticipated match being postponed. If such scenario occurs, the league said Game 3 will be held on Wednesday at the same venue. One things for sure, the two teams certainly cant wait to dispute the coveted trophy that bares a sculpted man raising both his fists in victory. For me, I just cant wait to go out there, La Salle coach Juno Sauler told The Bulletin yesterday. Its been a week since we last played and for me, Im anxious because of the waiting period and not because of nervous anxiety. Im just a little bit excited for the game. Nakaready naman tayo e, UST mentor Pido Jarencio said. May mga adjustments tayo ginawa pero sa mga bata na lang yan. Laban lang kung laban lang kasi deadlock na tayo dito e. Basta yung game plan masunod lang okay na, tayo puso na lang. What Sauler and Jarencio differ is the outcome of 14th Game 3 in UAAP finals history where a huge crowd from both schools is expected to fill the spacious venue that recently saw the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers play in front of some empty seats. For sure (close yan), kasi alam mo naman must-win na dito e, said Jarencio, who lost a Game 3 as a player for UST in 1984 but won as a coach during the Tigers 2006 Cinderella run. …
