Helius and JDL Improve Satellite Internet Access

A partnership between Helius, Inc. and JDL Technologies has produced a new Internet solution for K-12 schools. Using Helius satellite access software, the K-12WORLD Satellite Server from JDL provides a high-speed and affordable Internet connection with several software features that improve the use of Internet content in the classroom. "Insufficient infrastructure often limits the Internet as a usable tool for classroom instruction," said Myron Mosbarger, president of Helius, Inc. "Satellite-based Internet access solves this problem in three ways: high-speed, low cost and universal availability."

Satellite transmission of Internet data, which costs less than a T1 line and is faster than ISDN, is received by a school's local area network (LAN) using the network edition of DirecPC software from Helius. From there several software options help optimize the use of downloaded data and filter content. "Research on learning reveals that `time on task' is a critical element in student achievement levels," said Dr. Allen Schmieder, JDL vice president of K-20 programs at JDL and former senior science and technology program director for the Department of Education.
