Beard Will Join Wizards

SAN ANTONIO - The Washington Wizards will hire former New Jersey Nets coach Butch Beard next week as new head man Gar Heard's top assistant, according to sources close to the situation.
Beard's impending hire also is an indication that interim coach Jim Brovelli will not return next season.
Beard will bring more head coaching experience to the Wizards' bench than they have had in years. Beard coached the New Jersey Nets in the 1994-95 and 1995-1996 seasons, going 30-52 both times.
Before that, Beard coached the Howard University men's team from 1990 to 1994. He took the Bisons to their high point in 1992, when they finished 17-14, tied Coppin State for the MEAC regular-season title, won the league tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA tournament.
Like Heard, Beard also played in the NBA. A No. 1 pick by the Atlanta Hawks and 10th overall, Beard also played for Cleveland, Seattle, Golden State and New York. He averaged 9.3 points and played in 605 games in his career, was named to the All-Star team once and also played on an NBA championship team …
