IT Must Be the Future Says Software Industry

McGILL, Adrienne, The News Letter (Belfast, Northern Ireland)

THE Province's software industry has the potential to create 15,000 new jobs and generate revenues of pounds 2 billion, according to a report launched yesterday.

IT's the Future, the strategy document by the Software Industry Federation, makes a number of recommendations on how the sector can move forward over the next five years and calls on government, education and industry to rally together to support IT development.

Attending the event at the Belfast Hilton, Northern Ireland First and Deputy First Ministers David Trimble and Seamus Mallon told the gathering of more than 100 IT professionals that the software industry in the Province held the key to future economic growth.

"As well as developing export focused software companies, our traditional industries must also be able to use these technological advances to improve productivity and management methods and to increase sales through e- commerce and global marketing on the Internet," said Mr Trimble.

Recommendations in the report include:

An increased emphasis on Information Technology skills at primary and secondary school levels

Position Northern Ireland as an e-commerce hub

Remove the cap on IT university places by providing an additional 1,500 graduate places per annum.
