Organic Food Claim Fails to Curry Flavour.; COCKSPARROW FARM KITCHEN


An organic curry con has left food experts hot under the collar. Cocksparrow Farm Kitchen near Sutton Coldfield claims to use organic ingredients in all of its dishes. But the Indian takeaway service is not listed on the UK Register of Organic Food Standards (UKROFS). By law, anyone selling goods labelled as "organic" must be licensed by UKROFS and regulated by one of several food agencies. The agencies carry out strict checks on growers to ensure consumers are sold genuine products. A spokeswoman for the Soil Association, the leading agency said: "Anyone breaking these rules is exploiting people's concerns abut food safety to make money." The manager, who would only identify himself as Mr Singh, said he has just launched the business. In an advertisement, he states: "We grown our own vegetables on the farm without chemical fertilizers and pesticides. "All the ingredients we use in our recipes are organic." When Mr Singh was contacted by the Sunday Mercury he said: 'I know about the laws and regulations, but I am not registered with any organisation. "The vegetables are from our own garden - they are home-grown, not organic. "But we have lived here for 18 years and have never used any chemical fertilizers on the land. …
