Terror Alert at Olympics
SECURITY was sharply tightened at the Winter Olympics today after a mortar attack on Tokyo's international airport, where most foreign athletes are arriving arrive for the games starting this weekend.
Three mortar shells rained down on a car park in front ofthe cargo area at 11.45pm, wounding an airport worker with shrapnel.The airport was shut for an hour.
A massive storm that blew out of the Gulf of Mexico pummelled Florida, flipping small aircraft, uprooting trees and knocking out power. At least one person was killed. A string of tornadoes touched down in south Florida and most of the state was under a tornado warning or watch today.
A mystery illness is killing hundreds of the world's rarest sea lions in sub-Antarctic waters south of New Zealand. The Department of Conservation said 1,200 New Zealand sea lion pups had died in the Auckland Islands group.
A landmark agreement banning the use of blinding laser weapons in war is to take effect in six months, the International Red Cross said. "Blinding is a totally unacceptable form of warfare," said Louise Doswald-Beck, deputy head of its legal division.
