Tourism Director Hired to Market the Clay Area Conventions, Conference Business Sought

A marketing and public relations specialist has been hired to be the first tourism director for Clay County.

Susan Soltys was named to the $35,000-a-year position last week and spent her first day on the job Wednesday.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge and I am excited about the opportunity," said Soltys, who lives in Middleburg.

After working in recruiting and office management on Wall Street for 11 years, Soltys moved to Clay County in 1991. She worked for the Jacksonville Port Authority for seven years and the Seaport Training and Employment Program for the past two years.

Her immediate objective is to attract conventions and conferences to Clay County "to fill the hotels and facilities."

"We are a very attractive area for those people who want to get away from the city and we have a lot of nice golf courses we can market," she said.

The position was created jointly by the Clay County Tourist Development Council and the Clay County Chamber of Commerce.

Mike Scott, executive director of the chamber, said he and Tourist Development Council members began discussing the possibility of forming an alliance several months ago to create a unified program to increase tourism and convention business in Clay County.
