Millennibrum: A Truly Global Collection of Literature; Pam Williams Reports on Poetry and Prose from around the World

Williams, Pam, The Birmingham Post (England)

There is a wide range of literature by African Caribbean, Asian and African writers, including those now living in Europe and the USA available for reference on the third floor in the Arts, Languages and Literature section of the Central Library.

Here you can read and study their poetry, plays and novels, critical books about them and other post colonial literature. From Africa, for example, there are the plays of Athol Fugard and of Wole Soyinka and Ben Okri from Nigeria, of Dambudzo Marechera from Zimbabwe and Ngugi wa Thiong'o from Kenya. A recent study is of Nigeria's first woman writer, Flore Nwapa.

Anthologies of short stories and women's writing extend coverage to other less well known writers.

From African Caribbean literature, there are, for example, the poetry and plays of Derek Walcott, originally from St Lucia and now the winner in 1992 of the Nobel Prize for Literature, the novels of Michael Anthony and of Andrew Salkey from Trinidad and of Beryl Gilroy from Guyana.
