Agriculture Sector Posts 3.5% Growth
The country's agriculture sector posted a 3.5 percent growth during the first nine months of the year, lifted by the good perfomance of all critical subsectors, Agriculture Secretary Edgardo Angara said yesterday.
Angara said a decent growth rate for the sector is expected at the end of the year, topped by an expected palay production of 12.4 million metric tons, the highest in the country's rice production history.
In a memorandum to President Estrada, Angara said that all the agriculture subsectors - crops, livestock, poultry and fisheries - increased their output for a balanced growth.
The crop subsector expanded by 3.60 percent and the main growth areas were palay, coconut, banana and abaca. Even the minor crops increased their output, he added.
The DA chief stressed that agricultural growth in the first semester of this year only reached 2.4 percent. He noted tha the outstanding performance of the third quarter this year, which is recorded at 5.5 percent, has led to a dramatic increase in the overall performance of the agricultural sector for the period January to September.
The livestock sector grew by 2.6 percent while the chicken industry recovered from last year's slump and rebounded with a 6.1 percent growth, said Angara.
