The Crystal Lake Tidal Waves Blue U18 softball team went 4-2 at the ASA Metro Tournament in Orland Park last weekend.

The Tidal Waves defeated the Southside Breakaways 11-1, Orland Park A's Green 2-1 and Crete 7-0 before losing their first game 9-1 to Tri-County. The Tidal Waves then beat the Deerfield Wildcats 6-1, but were eliminated by the Plainfield Panthers 4-2.

Michelle Puzzo was the winning pitcher in the first two games of the tournament. She threw 8 innings of 3-hit ball and struck out nine in the two games. She also went 3-for-6 with 4 RBI in those games. Veronica Ursetto drove in 2 runs and Michelle Kunz had an RBI against Southside, while Kim Hofert and Kelly Landers each went 2-for-4 against Orland Park.

Shannon Everett threw a 4-hitter in the shutout win over Crete. Landers and Katie Pickens each went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI to support Everett. The Tidal Waves, however, had a six-hour layoff before their next game and it cost them against Tri-County. Becky Miller went 3-for-3 in the loss.

Everett helped get the Tidal Waves back on the winning track by pitching them to victory over Deerfield. Miller went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Landers and Hofert each went 2-for-4. Miller then went 2-for-3 and drove in both runs in the tournament-ending loss to Plainfield.

Northern Stars U18 softball

The Northern Stars, based out of Streamwood, competed in the Woodstock Tournament last weekend and went 3-3 and took fourth place.

The Stars went 2-1 in pool play and then 1-1 in bracket play to earn a berth in the third-place game. Unfortunately, the Stars fell 7-3 to the Hinsdale Central Red Devils.

"We played real well. The girls are definitely starting to come together," Stars coach Glen Smith said. "Our pitchers have been pitching real well. We just need our bats to come around."

The Stars beat the Harvard Sting 4-2, Goose Island Joe's 6-4 and fell to the Red Devils 3-2 the first day. The next day, the Stars defeated the Kaneland Thunder 2-0, but fell to the Sting 1-0 to drop into the third place game.

Sharon Johnson pitched well in the tournament getting the decision in both Harvard games. Ann Seyller picked up the shutout win over Kaneland. Johnson, who went 3-for-3 in the tournament opener, and Jessica Avila, paced the hitting attack for the Stars.

Elgin Heat U16 softball

The Heat traveled to Rockford for the ASA Metro Tournament and went 4-3 there to improve its season record to 24-15.

The Heat lost the first game of the tournament 2-1 to the Oak Forest Royals, but won four of the next five games before being eliminated with a 9-6 loss to the Homewood Rolling Thunder.

Kim Dean was a hitting machine for the Elgin Heat. She finished the tournament with a .640 batting average. She was 16-of-25 at the plate with 2 doubles and had at least 2 hits in all seven games.

Lauren Morstad went 3-1 to lead the Heat on the mound, while fellow pitcher Lisa Diedrick went 1-2, but struck out 22 batters, including 11 in the loss to the Royals.

The Heat pounded out 21 hits in a win over Frankfort. Leading the way was Morstad, who went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI and Katie Grens, who went 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Morstad also hit well in a win over the Rolling Thunder with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Laura Greinke went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Kim Johnson was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.

After a loss to the Oak Park Windmills, the Heat got back on the winning track against Hoffman Estates. Kylee Teboda went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Diedrick, who got the win, went 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI. Morstad added 3 RBI on a 3-for-4 effort.

Teboda and Dean each doubled in a win over Joliet. The Heat also had 4 triples in a losing cause against Homewood. In that loss, Lindsey Karle went 4-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Teboda went 3-for-4 with 2 triples and an RBI and Diedrick went 2-for-4 with a triple.
