Dist. 203 Forms Committee to Study Indoor-Air Quality

Hart, Christie, Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL)

Byline: Christie Hart Daily Herald Staff Writer

Highlands Elementary School teachers first spoke up this fall with concerns the air in their classrooms might be making them sick.

Since then, teachers at Elmwood Elementary School and Naperville Central High School have discussed similar flulike symptoms they believe come from their work environments.

Now, Naperville Unit District 203 is launching a committee of teachers, administrators and parents to help guide how it copes with air quality questions at the three schools and elsewhere.

The indoor air-quality committee set to work Wednesday, reviewing what the district has done and charting a course of action.

Its first step will be to send a letter to parents explaining the concerns about air quality in Highlands, Elmwood and Central, and outlining work already done to help students and teachers breathe a little easier.

"I think there's validity in going to parents and staff this school year and saying 'Here's what we're doing,' " said Betty Wine, a science teacher at Central who has noted air problems in her part of the building. "I think they need to know that the district is taking some action before that break in June (when the school year ends).
