It was a simple case of being in the right place at the right time for Illinois Wesleyan junior forward Todd Wente.
Wente rebound basket of an errant shot by Laban Cross with 1 second left in double overtime gave Illinois Wesleyan a 115-113 victory over Aurora University in an exhilarating nonconference game played at Aurora University's Thornton Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
"I give Laban Cross all the credit for keeping the ball alive and getting a shot off," Wente said. "I was surprised the ball came to me. I just shot not knowing how much time was left. This is a great win on the road. We kept our poise and came away with the win."
AU (4-3) controlled the first 28 minutes of the game and led 61-47 with 12 minutes remaining.
IWU (7-1), ranked No. 13 in the nation in Division III, methodically got back in the game and tied the game at 80 on a rebound basket by Seth Hubbard with 4:12 left in regulation.
The Titans stayed hot and scored 8 more consecutive points and led 88-80 with 3:26 left.
It was AU's turn at a comeback. The Spartans regained the lead at 95-93 on a rebound basket by Brent Gooden with 1:01 left in regulation. A 10-footer by Jerry Happ with 52 seconds tied the game at 95. AU's Jabari Harrell missed a shot with 25 seconds left and was rebounded by Happ.
Wesleyan coach Dennis Bridges called timeout with 17 seconds left, but the Titans couldn't get a shot off sending the game into overtime.
There were 4 lead changes …
