Loyola Ends It for Galesburg

NORMAL - The Class AA showdown is set.

After its 59-43 triumph over Galesburg in Friday's quarterfinal at Illinois State's Redbird Arena, No. 2-ranked and defending Class AA state champion Loyola could finally look ahead to today's semifinal against top-ranked Marshall.

'That's what you've all been dreaming about," said Loyola coach Tanya Johnson Friday to a group of media. "I'm really happy we got this far.

"As far as playing Marshall, I'm sure they'll press us and I'm sure that will be a factor in the game. The question is can we beat their press and can we scored inside?"

The Ramblers (34-1) were able to do that against Galesburg and also played their traditional solid defense.

"They took us out of all the things we wanted to do," said Galesburg coach Evan Massey. "I think their defensive intensity was greater than we anticipated."

Loyola center Olga Gvozdenovic scored 21 of her game-high 23 points in the second half. Also reaching double figures for Loyola were Laura Sobieszczyk (18) and Elizabeth Fletcher (10). Jeanette Paukert added 6 assists.

"I think Laura did a great job on Megan Pacheco (Galesburg's star who scored 13 points)," Johnson said.
