Miss Fox River Grove Crowned without Pomp and Circumstance

They may not have had the spectacle of a pageant, but the suspense was just as real.
In a reception at First Chicago Bank Friday night, Jessica Bowman was crowned 1998 Miss Fox River Grove.
"It was such a surprise, and it's a great honor to represent Fox River Grove," she said after winning. "I hope to do the best I can with this title."
Bowman, 17, and a senior at Cary-Grove High School, is the daughter of Dennis and Lois Bowman.
First runner-up was Melissa Mortimer, 17, and a senior at Jacobs High School. Second runner-up was Natalie Mascolino, 16, and a junior at Cary-Grove High School.
Instead of a traditional pageant, each contestants wrote an essay and were interviewed by a three-judge panel. The winner was announced during a cake-and-punch reception.
The sponsor, Fox River Grove's Chamber of Commerce, chose that type of contest because of time and funding constraints, organizer Donna Brouder said. …
