West Chicago Board Hires Illinois Native for Superintendent

School board members at West Chicago High School carried with them an outline of the new leader they wanted for the district.
Illinois native Griff Powell, who starts as superintendent July 1, apparently fit that picture.
"He's been in situations similar to those at our high school," board President Gerald Landis said.
The 50-year-old Powell has seen rising student enrollment, students from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds and schools needing more room.
By comparison, West Chicago High School District 94 expects 700 to 800 new students, has a diverse student population and twice recently presented proposed tax hikes. Voters said "no" both times.
Powell oversaw six successful referendum campaigns in the past four years. Two involved building expansions, one was for $10 million in technology, and the remaining referendums were for the district's annual budgets.
School board members said they wanted prior experience in a district's top job. …
