Fox River Grove to Discuss Proposed Youth Smoking Ordinance

Fox River Grove Trustee Larry Eckel smokes cigarettes, and he wants to help his colleagues craft an ordinance to keep youths from picking up the habit.
"It's an expensive, stupid habit, and I'm sorry I ever started," Eckel said. "But I think this should be more of a community service thing than a fine, at least for first-time offenders.
"I think we want parents to know what their kids are doing," Eckel added. "I don't think we want the cops rousting every kid with a pack of cigarettes."
Eckel plans to make his opinions known today when trustees on the village's public safety committee discuss creating a youth smoking ordinance. The committee will meet at 8 p.m. at the village hall, 408 Northwest Hwy.
Fox River Grove is not the first village to consider fining teen smokers. Communities including Crystal Lake, Arlington Heights and Wheeling recently have adopted local juvenile smoking bans.
