Educators in Area to Visit, Study Japan School System

They may have read the articles or perused the statistics, but a dozen area educators will learn firsthand this summer about the success of Japanese students.
The Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Chicago will send officials from Palatine Township Elementary District 15, Buffalo Grove-Long Grove Elementary District 96 and Park Ridge-Niles District 64 to four Japanese cities in its 13th annual "U.S. Educators to Japan" trip.
From June 24 to July 8, the group will meet with local government officials, stay with area families and visit schools.
Gifted program teacher Rita Sheridan of Plum Grove Junior High School in Rolling Meadows says she's glad she'll get to learn something about the many Japanese students she's taught.
Nearly 12 percent of the students in her school are Asian, compared with 7.3 district-wide.
"If you can put yourself in someone else's position, then you can better understand their problems, their hopes and their ambitions," she said. …
