Eight Is Magic Age for Solo Excursion to Lombard's Pool

O'Dowd, Sally, Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL)

Byline: Sally O'Dowd Daily Herald Correspondent

Seven-year-olds looking forward to a summer of independence will have to wait another year.

Children younger than 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult while at Moran Water Park, under this year's pool rules set by Lombard Park District officials.

In previous years, 7-year-olds could splash and swim on their own.

The change prohibiting children 7 years old and younger from entering the park without adult supervision was inconsistent with other pool safety rules, Director Dean Bostrom said.

The Park District Risk Management Association, an insurance carrier that serves 114 park districts, created the rule.

Board members also recently considered other changes in policies for the water park, which opens Memorial Day weekend.

Park board Vice President Kathy Hogan suggested board members reconsider an earlier decision to allow shoes and strollers in the pool area.

People wearing shoes around pools create a muddy, wet floor, Hogan said. This was the case at an indoor pool in Schaumburg she recently visited, she said, noting that the same thing could happen at Lombard's water park.

However, Bostrom argued that people should be allowed to wear shoes at the water park to prevent burning their feet.
