Township Leaders Fear Backlash at Annual Meetings

The routine could become controversial as townships hold their annual town meetings over the next two weeks.
Citizens groups campaigning to dissolve township governments plan to besiege selected meetings in Cook, DuPage, Lake and McHenry counties to publicize their agenda: the eradication of township governments that they see as rife with waste and patronage.
Some township officials fear that members of groups, like Send Township Officials Packing, or STOP, will cause disturbances.
STOP supporters may try to take control of these meetings, or pass resolutions, said George Miller, executive director of Township Officials of Illinois.
But Rosie Fitzpatrick, a Bloomingdale Township resident and co-chair of STOP in DuPage County, said, "We definitely are not going to disrupt the meetings."
Fitzpatrick said she has asked STOP members to mostly observe the town meetings. However, she said she and others will try to read statements of the group's stance into the record during the open comment portion of the meetings. …
