Barrington's Conquest of Wheeling Shakes Up Mid-Suburban Chase

Barrington's epic win over Wheeling last week that threw the Mid-Suburban North race into turmoil could serve as a solid base from which to grow the volleyball program.
"First it is important to the varsity because it shows that hard work does pay off," said second-year coach Mark Swaya, whose team won 11-15 15-3 15-11.
"It is important for the freshmen and junior varsity because they stayed around to watch it. They are more enthused to practice and work hard. This was our biggest win in two years.
"I felt we were in control the whole match," the coach continued. "An assistant said, 'I think we are going to win.' As a team, we had our highest hitting percentage, and our passing was very good, and our aces to errors ratio was good."
Tim Paymaster led the Broncos with 22 kills and just 3 errors, Carlo Agnello had 11 kills with just 1 error, Joe Abbate had 3 aces, and Henry Soltesz and Agnello blocked well.
The win highlighted a great turnaround for the Broncos, who won just 2 of their first 12 games, but since have won 10 of 17.
"We have a small (numerical) volleyball team. Everybody has to come in and contribute. They are playing at 100 percent of their potential," Swaya said.

After Tuesday night's action, the Mid-Suburban North picture became much clearer than it had been since Wheeling fell back into the three-way tie with Fremd and Palatine.
After nine of 10 games in the long, competitive campaign were finished, there was only one remaining way that Wheeling wouldn't have been the North Division …
