Denver is proud to consider itself the sports and recreation capital of the Rocky Mountains. Colorado is second only to Hawaii for being the fittest state in the nation, with the lowest percentage of citizens being classified as overweight, and is rated as a best city for men's health by Men's Fitness Magazine.
In addition to being a fit city, Denver is strongly committed to promoting women's health. We just hosted the largest local race in the nation -- the Race for the Cure, with 53,000 participants -- in the fight to find a cure for breast cancer.
Denver has been blessed with economic prosperity. Denver's Mayor Wellington E. Webb is a champion of open space, naming parks and recreation as one of his three top priorities, along with education and public safety. Mayor Webb states, "Our wonderful parks, parkways, and trails are not only our premier assets, but also critical factors in our long-term ability to compete economically for business development, tourism, and new residents."
Denver has one of the largest park systems in the country, and with the recent park developments at the old Lowry Air Force Base, the former Stapleton Airport, the South Platte River Corridor and other areas around the city, Denver has increased its park acreage by 100%. We are adding more open space to our parkland than during any other period in our history.
Denver's residents support their parks and recreation system and have demonstrated that support by passing an 89.6 million-dollar bond issue. This investment will build three new recreation facilities that will add to the unique system of neighborhood based recreation centers, transform play areas for children, construct one of the largest skate parks in the country, and strengthen the heart beat of many communities with its park restoration projects.…
