Villa Park Library Employees to Get Competitive Pay Raises

Sanchez, Robert, Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, IL)

Byline: Robert Sanchez Daily Herald Staff Writer

Villa Park library trustees, concerned that higher-paying jobs at other libraries will lure away employees, said they support increasing salaries this year.

The only question left to consider is how much.

Before a special library board meeting Saturday, library director Ted Balcom told trustees the library's salaries and wages are not competitive with those offered in surrounding communities.

Balcom said a beginning reference librarian, a position that requires a master's degree, earns $10 an hour in Villa Park. The same position pays $14 or $15 an hour in nearby towns, he said.

"Typically, when we go to recruit someone, we get people who say: 'I would like to consider working for you ... but the pay is terrible,' " Balcom said.

Trustees responded to Balcom's comments by saying they support a salary increase that would take effect May 1.

"We've known about this for a long time," Trustee Pat Hubbard said. "We just never realized there was such a discrepancy."

Although trustees gave verbal support, a formal vote on the matter has not yet been taken.
