Thunder Girls Reach Semi-Finals of Tournament

The season's outlook was bright and sunny for the Mundelein Thunder U-10 traveling girls softball team, as they came within a game of playing for the championship at the Tidal Waves Classic softball tournament in Crystal Lake.

The Thunder drew the host Tidal Waves for the first game. The Thunder kept the game close for the first two innings. After spotting the Tidal Waves five runs in the first, the Thunder came back with two in the bottom half of the inning when Marcie Pasquesi and Kimmie Krause scored after reaching base on walks.

In the second inning, the Thunder held the Tidal Waves to one run. After a leadoff single and a throwing error put the inning's leadoff hitter on third, the Thunder defense retired the next three hitters on a groundout from Alex Santana to Colleen Stanczykiewicz, a strikeout and a solo groundout to Stanczykiewicz. A tough third inning staked the Tidal Waves to a 14-2 lead. It looked like the Thunder might stage a comeback in the bottom half of the inning when leadoff hitter Courtney Krebs opened the inning with a standup triple, but the Tidal Waves ended the scoring threat and the game was called on time.

Additional defensive highlights were Mickey Mound fielding a ground ball up the middle from her center field position, stepping on second for one out, and firing to first for a near double-play, as well as a first-inning double play. After Krebs struck out one hitter, catcher Shea Crowley fired a throw to Amanda Puccinelli to shoot down the runner trying to steal third. Krebs and Pasquesi handled the pitching duties.

Thunder 15, Cougars 7: The next game was played against the Elmhurst Cougars. With Mickey Mound in the circle for the Thunder, the first inning saw the team give up one run.
