Warren Twp. Returns Money to Retirement Fund

Warren Township trustees Monday agreed to return $120,000 to an employee retirement fund after being accused of allowing the cash to be illegally diverted for payment of a shuttered Gurnee post office.
Plans had called for the post office on O'Plaine Road to be converted into a teen center, but now the idea is in limbo because township officials don't know if there is enough money elsewhere in the budget to pay for it.
Township Supervisor Suzanne Simpson said bad legal advice from Chicago attorney Richard Cowen is why officials agreed to transfer the $120,000 from the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund to a general account.
Simpson said she plans to ask the township board to fire Cowen, who was not present at Monday's meeting and could not be reached for comment.
"We will also be receiving resumes in probably the next two weeks for a new (lawyer). This was an egregious kind of error," Simpson said.
Last week, attorneys from the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund said Warren Township's transfer of the pension cash violated state law and they contacted Simpson. …
