Get out the Tums: Chili Cook-Off Saturday to Aid Homeless Shelter

Byline: Patrick Waldron

Remember to bring your crackers to the St. Charles Veterans of Foreign Wars post this Saturday.

Chillini Chili Pod will host a chili cook-off benefiting the Lazarus House in St. Charles at the post, 119 N. Third St. in St. Charles.

The Chillini Chili Pod is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation founded in St. Charles in 1993. (It got its name by combining "chili" and "Illini," the American Indian tribe for which the state is named.)

The chili pod is made up of chili lovers from Michigan to Arizona with a goal of raising money for charities and civic groups through special cook-offs.

Saturday's cook-off has an entry fee of $17 and is open to the public. Spectators are urged to taste the chili for a $2 donation.

The group will have a cook's meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Cooking runs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Public tasting and judging starts at 1 p.m.

The official chili rules state that chili must be cooked on site, the chili must be cooked from scratch, the chili may contain no fillers, only one chili is allowed per contestant and sanitary regulations must be followed.
