Football: England Ace Gareth Is Fergie's Top target.(Sport)

Byline: PAUL SMITH

ENGLAND defender Gareth Southgate is the first name on Sir Alex Ferguson's shopping list this summer.

Ferguson wants the 31-year-old central defender to partner England team-mate Wes Brown at the heart of the United defence.

He believes Southgate's experience and guidance will prove invaluable in helping Brown fulfil his immense potential.

More importantly, Ferguson hopes Southgate will be the answer to the defensive frailties that undermined the club's last campaign.

Ferguson is reluctant to spend heavily, given Southgate's age, but is ready to look again at a Boro move for Dwight Yorke, which fell through last season, and offer the striker as bait.

Yorke is certain to be on his way this summer after being unceremoniously dumped into training with the youth team.

And Ferguson is prepared to lower the asking price for Yorke to about pounds 4m in a bid to land Southgate, who he values at a similar figure.
