ABBEY RIPS AWAY ITS SALES SIDE Abbey National is to appoint a new marketing director in a major shake-up of its entire sales and marketing operation.

John Berry, previously southern field operations director, will take control of Abbey National's 100-strong marketing department on November 1. His predecessor Alan Dunstan will fill the new role of sales director in charge of its 8000-strong sales staff.

The move will prompt a review of the marketing function, which will now have the sales and customer service elements stripped out to concentrate on "delivering customers to the branch door".

Sources already say that Berry is not happy with advertising from agency Publicis, which handles a 16m pounds (Media Register) slice of Abbey National business and has produced award-winning work. Corporate affairs manager Stewart Gowans claims, however, that all ad programmes "are going through", and that Berry has "just slid into Alan's shoes".

But Gowans confirms an "update" meeting to review Publicis' work will take place this week.

The restructuring at Abbey National head office follows 18 months of reorganisation at branch level. …
