County Character College to Foster Leadership in Children

About 300 DuPage County middle school students will be going to college today to learn how they can help foster good character and leadership.
County Character College will be in session from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the student resource center at College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn.
"We're hoping participants will become ambassadors of good character in their schools and their communities," said Jerome Gordon, superintendent of Bloomingdale Elementary District 13 and a coordinator of the event.
Students from Glenbard East and Hinsdale Central high schools will lead programs on leadership and respect. Gary Gates, a counselor at Edison Middle School in Wheaton, will focus on decisions and decision-making.
The Illinois Juggling Institute will combine fun with the seriousness of topics such as perseverance, and the Wheaton Park District will bring in some activities from the Lincoln Marsh Teams Course to demonstrate the importance of communication and cooperation.
The Happiness Club, a group of Chicago children, will sing original songs to teach positive values.
Keynote speaker Mike Thomson will focus on turning problems into opportunities.
