Laborers at Fermilab say they could ring in the New Year with a strike.
Members of the International Association of Machinists and Auto Mechanics Local 701 plan to hold a demonstration from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Ramsey Hall Auditorium in Wilson Hall on the Fermilab campus. They will hand out leaflets to those attending the Windham Hill "Winter Solstice" show.
The union represents 120 computer operators, machinists, welders, electricians, maintenance workers and drivers who work at the high-energy physics research laboratory in Batavia.
Union representative Sal Falcone said he hopes the informational demonstration Saturday will spur concessions in ongoing contract negations. If it doesn't, laborers could walk off the job.
"I would think that it could happen right after the first of the year," he said.
Officials at Fermilab said they have done their best to prevent that.
"We have negotiated in good faith for over a year and have been through federal mediation," said spokesman Mike Perricone. …
