Racing News: Derby Bubble Bursts; Alberto Giacometti Gamble Goes Astray

LEOPARDSTOWN'S PW McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes has produced the last two Vodafone Derby winners but there was a massive upset in this year's race as Aidan O'Brien's Alberto Giacometti, the subject of a huge ante-post gamble for the Epsom Classic, had his bubble well and truly burst yesterday.
It was his pacemaker Balestrini, a completely unconsidered 33-1 chance, who landed the spoils after quickly building up a healthy lead from which it became apparent turning for home that he would take some catching.
Mick Kinane got serious on Alberto Giacometti (4-6) but he found next to nothing and it was Johnny Murtagh on his market rival Alamshar (5-4) who gave chase.
John Oxx's Key Of Luck colt was fairly eating up the ground close home but the finishing line appeared just in time for Tom Queally and Balestrini, who held on by half a length to give O'Brien a third successive victory in the 10-furlong contest following Galileo in 2001 and High Chaparral last year.
Winning rider Queally, 18, was enjoying his first success for O'Brien.
