Michigan Hires West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez as Next Coach

Starr, Rick, Tribune-Review/Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez broke the news to his team on Sunday in Morgantown, W.Va., that he will replace Lloyd Carr as Michigan coach.

Rodriguez also informed his top recruit prospect, Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor, that the deal was done, sources said.

Michigan athletic director Bill Martin said Rodriguez would be introduced in a press conference at 9 a.m. Monday in Michigan's Junge Family Champions Center.

ESPN.com reported Rodriguez's new Michigan deal will average $2.5 million per year, for a $700,000 annual raise over his previous contract.

Rodriguez announced his decision two days after meeting with Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman and Martin on Friday in Toledo.

Rodriguez has a $4 million buyout clause in his current contract if he leaves West Virginia before September. Half the buyout would be due immediately, and the rest of it in three years.

Details about the payment of the buyout have not been announced by WVU or Michigan officials.

However, basketball coach John Beilein may have set the standard for Rodriguez in April when he left WVU for Michigan.
