In case anyone doubts the profound change in the U.S. Supreme Court made by President George W. Bush with his naming of John Roberts and Sam Alito, consider their recent decision to overturn the court's precedent on so-called "partial-birth" abortion.
Until now the high court had thrown out laws banning the procedure without an exception to protect the health of the mothers. Now the court says a 2003 federal prohibition law happily signed by Bush containing no such exception is constitutional and must be applied in Missouri, thereby overturning an earlier decision by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
