THE NEWLY launched BBC4 is certainly racking up some high- profile productions. After its recent lauded run in London's West End, Peter Nichols's remarkable A Day in the Death of Joe Egg (9pm) has been specially filmed for the channel. Eddie Izzard, who is crossing over convincingly from stand-up to serious acting, and Victoria Hamilton (right, with Izzard) lead a strong cast, which includes Prunella Scales John Warnaby and Robin Weaver. Izzard and Hamilton play Bri and Sheila, a couple who spin a string of jokey fantasies as a strategy for dealing with the stress of looking after their severely handicapped daughter.
