Football: Surgeon Says Pires May Be out until Early Next Year

Following his successful knee operation on Thursday morning, the Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires faces an anxious wait to find out if he will be discharged from hospital in time to receive his Player of the Year award in London on Thursday evening.
Pires is currently recovering in Marseille, where he underwent one-and- a-quarter hours of keyhole surgery to repair the damage to his cruciate ligaments. The injury, which put paid to Pires's World Cup this summer, was sustained in the FA Cup quarter-final replay at Highbury on 23 March. The man who carried out the operation, Professeur Jean-Pierre Fran-ceschi, insists the Arsenal player is in good spirits, if still a little groggy. "Robert is making a decent recovery," Franceschi said. "We will have to look at the knee on Monday and re-evaluate the situation from there.
"I know that he is keen to go to London to be at the Football Writers' dinner, but it is still too early to tell if he will make it. I will have to make a purely professional decision on the matter on Tuesday. …
