MY WEEK: Anastasia Fedotova ; the Profoundly Deaf Student Who Gained Six A Grade A-Levels but Was Rejected by Oxford University

Wright, Lesley, The Independent (London, England)

SUNDAY

THE BBC arrives at my flat to film an interview. We discuss what has been happening. I tell them the scandal started innocently when the Manchester Evening News asked if it could take my photograph because I had gained six grade As in my A-levels. They asked what my plans were and I said I'd been rejected by Oxford. Then I was contacted by newspapers and my MP; a few people were expressing their concern. It seems strange I should be rejected by Oxford, having gained one of the best sets of results in the country. It makes me wonder if it's necessary to take six A-levels when only three are needed for university. If universities aren't interested in the number of A-levels attained, people may be discouraged from working hard.

MONDAY

Yesterday's interview is broadcast on breakfast news, but seems to be distorted. It is implied my family believe I was rejected because of my deafness, but I doubt this is true. That point was raised by the Disability Rights Committee, not by us. My mum suspects it's because I need to work on my presentation.

TUESDAY

My mum takes phone calls from newspapers about my disability, my opinions on the rejection and so on.
