Warning of the week: dengue danger
This highly unpleasant mosquito-borne disease is spreading rapidly through the tropics, particular in Latin America. The travel medical specialist Masta says there have been "reports of six cases of dengue fever (and many more suspected cases) on the Galapagos Islands" - the first time that the disease is believed to have occurred there. Dengue fever is becoming more widespread in Mexico, where the health authorities have warned of an increase in the number of cases throughout the country, in particular in the states of Colima, Veracruz and Jalisco.
In El Salvador, more than 3,200 cases were reported a month ago, a significant increase on last year's figures. A further 14,000 cases are suspected. The President of El Salvador has declared a state of emergency in the worst-affected departments of San Salvador, Libertad, Santa Ana and Cabanas.
