We can perhaps dare to start to think of what happens to the world economy when the war is over. The financial markets, in their usual incoherent way, have begun to look beyond the conflict. The markets that you would expect to weaken, like oil and gold, have duly done so. The markets that ought to strengthen, most notably Wall Street, have put in a solid performance. Such modest celebrations may well prove premature but it is the task of markets to peer forward, and any improvement in their condition must be welcome.
