Her Outdoors: A Triumph of Creative Writing: My CV
Perkins, Emily, The Independent on Sunday (London, England)
There's a well-known joke about screenwriters (but I'll tell you it all the same) that is also about a dumb starlet. Traditionally she's Polish, but that's probably unacceptable now, so let's just call her blonde. She goes to Hollywood to make it big in movies - and starts sleeping with the writer! You get the idea. No power, no glory, no damned sex appeal. (What about Dorothy Parker? What about Faulkner?) This is confirmed for me at a Q&A after a screening of a new film. Asked about control in the edit suite, the director pats the screenwriter's knee and says, "There's an inherent power structure here." And he isn't even trying to make the writer feel better!
