For a sector that is all about life's pleasures, there has not been much to smile about in the leisure industry. Starting with the 11 September attacks, hoteliers and travel companies have endured an unprecedented series of blows: a global economic slump; wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; bomb attacks in Bali and Turkey; the Sars pandemic. It has led to a slump in travel - both in the leisure and the higher-spending business segments - heightened security, nervousness and weakened investor sentiment.
