I am a native French speaker with fluent Spanish, a BA in French and Hispanic studies and a PGCE in secondary foreign languages. After a career break I have just done a return to teaching course, but have been working as a supply teacher as I am finding it difficult to get a job. I am concerned that schools are taking on younger and cheaper staff - I am 50. What else can I do?
It will be unlawful to discriminate on the basis of age in employment from October 1, and there are some hopeful signs that schools will pull through what even CILT, the National Centre for Languages, has called a "patchy phase" of demand for language teachers.
By 2010 all primary school children will have an entitlement to learn a foreign language, and secondary schools, especially language colleges, which are set to expand in number, should prepare to take a key role in working with feeder schools to try to ensure this happens. There are also plans to boost language learning again after 14, and for new GCSE courses such as applied French. So it is worth keeping up well targeted applications. Try registering with university language centres too, as non- degree language courses are in demand. There are many opportunities away from teaching, but interpreting and translation need some specialist skills and preferably a specialist area of knowledge.
